What is low-density open-cell spray foam insulation?
- Open-cell foam is a polyurethane foam with a cell structure composed of many small cells. This type of polyurethane foam is strong and resilient. It can be used on roof interiors, attics, floors, and walls, among other places.
- Open-cell spray foam insulation is spray foam that is used on walls and ceilings as a low density thermal insulator. Spray foam is one of the most popular ways to seal off air leaks and insulate different parts of a home that need it. Spray foam insulation with open cells has an airtight structure that prevents air leakage. Spray foam is soft because it has open cells, which makes it easy for moisture to build up. Compared to closed-cell spray foam insulation, this spray foam method is less expensive and expands more when applied to a surface. It makes for a tightly sealed building envelope, ensuring the best possible energy flow and increased energy efficiency.
- The tiny bubbles or cells that make up open-cell foam are not completely encapsulated; they are broken, torn, ripped, etc. Since they are broken, air fills the empty space inside the bubble, creating a supple, spongy substance.
- Water is typically used as the blowing agent for open-cell and high-R-value chemicals for closed-cell (Spray Foam Insulation) SPF, which helps form the bubbles or cells that make up the foam structure.
Which insulation should I use?
The choice between open-cell and closed-cell foam is frequently based on performance characteristics that are application-specific, such as structural integrity, control of water vapor, and the amount of installation space that is available.
There are also more general things to think about when choosing between open-cell and closed-cell foam, in addition to the specifics of the situation. For example, open-cell foam isn't usually recommended for applications below grade or where it might come into direct contact with water. Closed-cell foam isn't usually recommended for soundproofing applications because open-cell foam is better and cheaper.
Of course, it's a good idea to talk with your SPF installation expert as you plan your project. They will recommend the type of foam that will provide the best performance for your project.
